Located at Bennelong Point the Sydney Opera House is an award winning piece of architecture that was built mainly by a Danish architect by the name of Jorn Utzon. In 2003 he received the highest honor in architecture when he was awarded the Pritzker Prize for his designed of the Sydney Opera House, said to be his masterpiece.

It was in the 1950’s that the New South Wales Government started the planning stages of the Opera House with an appeal for fundraising with a competition for its design which in the end was won by Jorn Utzon. It was over the next couple of years that Utzon perfected the design of the sails, which he wanted to replicate sails at full mast. The total cost of the construction was said to be estimated at around Au $102,000,00 with up to 1 million tiles that were laid, 6225 square metres of glass, 645km of electric cable that was laid and 2194 pre-cast concrete selections as its roof which were just some of the costings for the completion of this building.

Considered to be one of the wonders of the modern world, the Sydney Opera House was constructed under some controversy but was finally opened in late 1973 by Queen Elizabeth II. Travellers from all around come to be pictured on the steps of this popular icon and be in awe of the cultural central of Sydney. It is recognised as one of the most popular images and it is up there with the Eiffel Tower and the Empire State Building as one of the most photographed in the world.

Back in 2007 on the 28th of June the Sydney Opera House was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site and houses several venues which is where Opera Australia, The Australian Ballet, The Sydney Theatre Company and the Sydney Symphony all perform here and the Sydney Opera House also plays host to a number of other performances throughout the year.

You can see the breathtaking architecture that his building is famous for and be taken behind the scenes of the Concert hall or Opera Theatre. With the Opera House along with the Sydney Harbour Bridge which is all based on the Sydney Harbour are some amazing sights to be seen when taking the ferry or even from up above when doing a scenic flight over the city.

The Sydney Opera House conducts over 3000 performances each year with a total audience walking through its doors of 2 million people to witness the shows that are put on here through the year. There is up to 1000 rooms included in the Opera House with a concert gall, and opera theatre, drama theatre and recital hall being included as well as restaurants and bars. Back in 1998 there was a fifth theatre added to the structure to accommodate the growing number of performances being held here each year.

The Sydney Opera House is one of the most fascinating attractions that everyone can visit when in Sydney, and along with the Sydney Harbour Bridge it is said to be the heart of Sydney.
